What is an athlete except for a being for which inwardness and exteriority are one ? Somebody whose will and thoughts are embodied in an absolute way in the shape of a body in the making of a gesture. It is probably the reason why photography has always loved athletes: when it is successful, the image grasps the whole truth of a being. I chose to take pictures of these athletes mostly when they are resting. The body, so bitterly shaped, finds itself deprived of its reason for being: it’s not about celebrating the performance but rather a presence. Massive and muscular or thin and graceful, each athlete offers himself to us such as he is in himself.
These images have been realized in Bulgaria in high level training camps, sport schools in Sofia, Plovdiv, Kyoustendil and Blagoevgrad. Building an athlete is there a severe education, both, physically and mentally. In a country where economics opportunity nowadays are very limited, issues of becoming a successfull athlete is a way out. Ten percent, this is the proportion who among hundreds of these athlete in construction will become profesionals. A hope for a career is firstly in their parents`mind, then comes the hope of the children became a tennager to follow the footsteps of iliustrous seniors like Alexander Tomov, Maria Petrova and Jordan Jovtchev, who are hoisted on the highest steps of the world podium.
Qu'est-ce qu'un athlète sinon un être où l'intériorité et l'extériorité ne font qu'un ? Quelqu'un dont la volonté et les pensées s'incarnent absolument dans une forme de corps, dans l'exécution d'un geste. Sans doute est-ce la raison pour laquelle la photographie a toujours aimé les athlètes: quand elle est réussie, l'image saisit la vérité entière d'un être.
Ces images ont été réalisées en Bulgarie, dans des centres d'entraînement de haut niveau, à Sofia, Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad et Kyoustendil. J'ai choisi de photographier ces gymnastes et lutteurs essentiellement au repos, dans une mise en scène qui les dépouille de la beauté trop souvent exhibée du sportif en plein effort. La discipline s'efface alors derrière le disciple, et le corps, si âprement modelé, se retrouve comme privé de sa raison d'être: il ne s'agit pas de célébrer la performance mais plutôt une présence.
Massif et musclé, ou bien fin et gracieux, chaque athlète s'offre à notre regard tel qu'en lui-même, leur être coïncide parfaitement avec leur paraître. Ces portraits sont comme des nus, et chacun pourra ainsi trouver les modèles pathétiques et grossiers, ou bien sensuels, fragiles, émouvants. En photographie, la nudité, au propre ou au figurée, ne doit pas empêcher la complexité et le mystère.
